COMMUNITY INITIATIVE: An English Public High School in Riverside South by 2017
|
|
Saturday, 14 April 2012
|
|
The Riverside South Community Association is working with a growing group of residents to advocate for a new English Public Secondary School in our community. The intent is to demonstrate that our growing community needs a new high school serving grades 7 to 12 in the next few years. Our goal, with strong vocal community support, is to have a new high school in Riverside South for September 2017.
A door-to-door survey of Riverside South is planned for May and June 2012. The intent of the survey is get an accurate snap-shot of the number of children in our community and if given the choice, who would attend an English Public High School in Riverside South. From the survey, we expect to be able to make accurate projections on elementary school needs as well. The survey results will be shared with the planning departments from all four school boards.
We hope to have enough volunteers for one or two surveyors for each street in Riverside South. If you are interested in helping to make a new high school in Riverside South a reality, please click here to sign up to volunteer.

Second stormwater pond approved in Riverside South

Councillor seeks promise that new ponds will be odour-free
With another stormwater pond on the way for growing Riverside South, Councillor Steve Desroches wants to ensure a "rotten egg" odour that plagued another pond isn't repeated. The city's planning committee approved a financial arrangement to construct a pond designed to hold excess rainwater and prevent flooding in an upcoming development.
The ponds, which are also supposed to function as recreational areas, have become a sore spot for Riverside South residents, who have complained of a strong sulphur smell emanating from the pond since 2009.
The agreement with the Riverside South Development Corporation for a new pond was delayed until last week on Oct. 25 as city staff tried to find solutions to fix the problem in an existing pond.

Electromagnetic machine to be used to eliminate rotten egg smell
A “high-tech solution” will be used in the escalating battle against a persistent, foul odour at a stormwater pond in Riverside South, says the councillor for the area. A smell of rotten eggs has emerged during three winters at the pond, adjacent to Dusty Miller Crescent near Earl Armstrong and Limebank roads, even after measures were taken to prevent the odour this year.
Residents first reported the smell in the winter of 2008-09 and again last winter, before it returned in recent months. The smell can spread for a few kilometres, residents have said, and is believed to be caused by the natural creation of hydrogen sulphide due to bacteria. Read the full article at ottawacitizen.com.

Here's an official update from Councillor Steve Desroches: I want to provide you with an update on the construction of the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge. I was informed today of the details that a major creditor has appointed a receiver to operate the contractor for the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge. Concreate USL, the contractor for the Strandherd-Armstrong Bridge, is in receivership. I am disappointed to learn the news, but pleased that operations are currently on-going at this time.
